YSR Congress party leader Sharmila, who has been undertaking Maro Praja Prasthanam padayatra, on Thursday became highly emotional at the Nettempadu lift-irrigation project in Mahabubnagar district.
Sharmila, who visited the project and spent nearly one hour there before resuming her day’s padayatra, shed tears of joy after talking to the officials there and inspecting the machinery of the project. Taking special interest in the project details, she strode through the entire project and couldn’t control her emotions. She also offered prayers and performed a holy bath to the statue of her father and former Chief Minister late Dr. Y S Rajasekhara Reddy with the water flowing in the project, and profusely garlanded the statue.
The Utility of the Nettempadu Project
The capacity of the Nettempadu Lift Irrigation Project, which was proposed with a cost of Rs. 78 crores prior to 2004 to supply irrigation water to 25,000 acres of land, was enhanced to provide irrigation to two lakh acres during the regime of Dr.YSR at a revised cost of Rs. 1428 crores. The project became part of Jalayagnam.
The project, which was completed up to 80%, will be able to provide irrigation to the projected 2 lakh acres in Alampur and Gadwal constituencies in the Mahabubnagar district, falling under its Ayacut, when the balance work is completed.
Out of the total cost, Rs. 1414 crores has been spent so far, and the 169-km Nettempadu Project Canal is ready for full operation. But, due to technical reasons, only 2,500 acres of land is being supplied with irrigation water from the project. (INN)
