Mild tension prevailed outside politician Y S Sharmila's Lotus Pond residence today when farmers from Andhra Pradesh's Rayalaseema region gathered there to stage a protest.
The farmers, led by AP Parirakshana Samithi head K Srinivasulu, assembled outside the leader's house to raise their voices against her stand on the current Krishna water row. She attracted their ire when she made a statement on the water row on her official Twitter handle.
In it, she had clearly stated that she would fight for the rights of Telangana in the interstate dispute. She had also said that she dared anybody to challenge the rights of Telangana to the Krishna waters, and that she would not keep mum if any injustice was done to the state in the allocation of the waters.
Angered by this, some farmers from Rayalaseema decided to stage a demonstration outside Sharmila's house. Although her representatives tried to pacify the protestors by stating that the leader's statements on the contentious irrigation project issue had been misconstrued, the farmers raised slogans against her "injustice" to AP.
Tensions soared and the two sides soon got into an altercation, forcing the police to intervene. After this, the demonstrators were shifted to the Banjara Hills police station.
One wonders how the kerfuffle will impact the image she has been curating so carefully in Telangana to carve a niche for herself and her new party in the state's political arena.
