The Telugu Desam Party, on Thursday, alleged that former CM the late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had meted out injustice to the Krishna delta region during his tenure as chief minister.
Talking to reporters, Mylavaram MLA and Krishna district TDP president Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao said that the Congress government had increased the number of gates of the Poti Reddipadu head regulator from 4 to 10 in 2006. As a result, water for irrigation could not be released to 13 lakh acres in Krishna delta and 22 lakh acres under the Nagarjunasagar Ayacut, he said.
He said that the TDP had raised the issue in February 2006 itself, complaining of injustice done to the Krishna delta.
Uma Maheshwara Rao said that the Congress government has cheated the farmers of the region again. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy promised to release 15 TMC of water to the Krishna delta, but has so far released only 3.5 TMC, he complained. This has resulted in the drying up of seedbeds in the entire region, he alleged.
The TDP leader demanded that the state government own up to the damages and pay compensation to the affected farmers. (INN)
