The ruling YSR Congress Party was routed in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections held last month, as also in the Lok Sabha elections held simultaneously.
Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's party won just 12 seats of the 175 in the Assembly. It had won 151 in 2019.
The TDP led the rout, winning 134 seats. Its alliance partners, the Jana Sena Party and the BJP, won 21 and 8 seats each respectively. The alliance thus won 163 seats. TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu is all set to take over as Chief Minister. The oath-taking ceremony is expected to be on June 9.
Of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the State, the TDP won 16, the JSP won two and the BJP won three. The YSRCP won just four.
With the 16 seats, Naidu is expected to wield enormous clout in the union government, given that the BJP has only about 240 seats and needs its NDA allies to get to the 272 mark. That should be good news for Andhra Pradesh.
