Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal leader Naveen Patnaik on Sunday said that the division of Andhra Pradesh has been proposed for "narrow political gains".
Speaking to media persons after meeting YSR Congress Party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy in Bhubaneshwar, Naveen Patnaik said that the the issue of bifurcation of AP needs a sensitive political dialogue.
In reply to a question, Patnaik said that there was no discussion about a "third front" with Jagan.
Later, Jagan told media persons that he had requested Naveen Patnaik to help in keeping AP united.
He said that the Article 3 of the Constitution needs an immediate amendment.
"It will set a new precedent. After AP, it will be implemented in other States. If we don't stop here, then anybody in power, in Delhi, will divide any state in the country at their whims and fancies," he said.
Jagan also said that the passing of a resolution in the Legislative Assembly concerned should be made mandatory to divide any state.
"There should be a unanimous resolution or at least two-third of majority, both in Assembly and Parliament, supporting the division. Else, the spirit of democracy will be killed," he said. (INN)
