Rajya Sabha member and Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology chairman T Subbirami Reddy on Saturday wrote to Chief Minister K Rosaiah asking him to withdraw the GO renaming the Lalitha Kala Thoranam.
Reddy stated that he was seeking withdrawal of the GO since he wanted to follow the wishes of the people.
The MP had earlier taken an initiative to develop the open air auditorium into a closed air-conditioned hall. He had requested the government to rename the auditorium after former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi once the development work was completed.
Reddy's suggestion was welcomed by the government. It had accepted Subbirami Reddy's proposal and subsequently passed a GO.
This had led to the opposition parties condemning the state government's move to rename the Lalitha Kala Thoranam after a former prime minister.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and all the Left parties alleged that the renaming of Lalitha Kala Thoranam would hurt the sentiments and emotions attached to crores of Telugu people and appealed to the government to retain the old name.
