The beef festival proposed by some of the student unions of Osmania University on December 10 is becoming a major controversy with a BJP MLA from the city Raja Singh strongly opposing it and declaring that he would obstruct the same at any cost.
The beef festival issue has also created differences within the BJP, with the MLA demanding the removal of Telangana BJP President G Kishan Reddy for his remarks on beef eating.
Addressing the media today, the BJP MLA from Goshamahal warned the organizers of the beef festival against hurting the sentiments of the Hindus. He warned that such a festival should be stopped to avoid a Dadri type incident taking place in Telangana.
He added that Kishan Reddy had insulted the Hindus by stating that anyone could eat any non-vegetarian food. While people technically had the right to eat anything of their choice, those eating beef would be hurting the Hindus' sentiments in the name of freedom of choice, he stated.
He also said that he would oppose the festival whether the BJP supported him or not. Asserting that he was prepared to do anything for protection of the cow, Singh said that Hindus had both the right and the duty to stop cow-killers. He called upon the lovers of cows to join him in stopping the festival.
He also accused the Telangana government of backing cow slaughter-houses.
The BJP MLA mounted a scathing attack on Kishan Reddy, alleging that Reddy was not extending any cooperation to party leaders like Chintala Ramachandra Reddy, Dr K Laxman, Dr Nagam Janardhan Reddy, N V V S Prabhakar and others. He said that under the leadership of Kishan Reddy the party was getting weakened. He said that he has addressing a letter to BJP President Amit Shah to replace Reddy as the Telangana BJP President.
