A 57-year-old resident of Bowenpally fell victim to an online scam, losing Rs 3.61 lakh after responding to a fake advertisement about an antique coin collection on Facebook.
Fraudsters, posing as officials of the so-called Indian Coin Company, purportedly based in Delhi, contacted the victim after he showed interest in their ad. They promised a payout of Rs 95 lakh in exchange for his old coin collection.
The gang first collected images of his coins, along with his photo and Aadhaar details. Later, they demanded money under various pretexts, including documentation charges, GST, delivery fees, customs clearance, flight tickets, accident compensation, bribes to police, hotel and food expenses, and a processing fee.
Trusting their assurances, the victim borrowed money from relatives and transferred funds multiple times, totaling Rs 3,61,847.
When no payment was made, he realized he had been defrauded and filed a complaint on the National Cybercrime Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) on September 21, 2025.
The Cybercrime police have cautioned citizens against falling for similar online coin or currency investment scams.
