The police on Saturday evening disrupted the four-day-old indefinite fast by seven students of the University Of Hyderabad over the suicide of Dalit student Rohith Vemula.
With the condition of the fasting students deteriorating, the police raided the fasting camp and asked the students to call off their fast. When the students refused to do that, they forcibly shifted them to the health centre in the university.
Earlier on Saturday morning, the students were examined by doctors, who said that the blood pressures of the students were weak and sugar levels falling, and concluded that their health conditions were critical. That resulted in the police intervening and forcibly shifting all of them to the UoH health centre.
Protesting the lifting of the fasting camp, some more students joined the fast at the site. They said that they would intensify the agitation and keep extending it to other universities in the city till their demands were met. The students demanded that the VC Appa Rao offer an explanation for why Vemula committed suicide, and for why his caste was being made controversial. They also sought his immediate removal.
