The recent burst of stormy weather has claimed lives, besides causing heavy crop loss.
The death toll due to the sudden unseasonal rains across the state has touched 25, while 12 others have been reported injured.
While 13 deaths were reported on April 22, 11 more died on Tuesday, and one more person died on Wednesday, taking the death toll to 25. Most of these deaths were reortedly due to lightning.
As many as 7 people were killed in Guntur, 4 in Nellore, 3 in Prakasam, 2 each in Warangal, Krishna and East Godavari, and one each in Khammam, West Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Adilabad and Mahaboobnagar. 6 people were injured in Warangal, 5 in Krishna and one in Khammam.
147 livestock, including 20 big animals, were also killed. 103 livestock deaths were reported from Warangal, followed by 19 in Nalgonda, 13 in Chittoor, 5 in Kadapa, 3 in West Godavari and one each from Khammam, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna.
A total of 1,121 houses were damaged, with the maximum damage being reported from Adilabad district, where 667 houses were ruined. Of them, 7 were damaged fully, 599 partly, and 61 severely. The numbers for other districts were: Karimnagar - 29, West Godavari - 12, Nalgonda - 8, Khammam - 3 and Guntur - 2.
As per preliminary estimates, 46,290 hectares of crop spread across 17 districts was damaged due to the unseasonal rain and hailstorm, from April 9 to 23.
The paddy crop was the worst hit, with fields spread over 38,297 hectares being ruined, followed by maize (7058 Ha), sesumam (328 Ha), groundnut (193 Ha), sunflower (187 Ha), jowar (116 Ha) and ragi (11 Ha).
Similarly, horticulture crops spread across 24,240 hectares in 15 districts have been damaged, according to the Disaster Management Commissioner, Dr. T Radha. (INN)
