Unseasonal rains, hailstorms and thunderbolts that occurred in different parts of Andhra Pradesh for the last 2 days have claimed 9 lives.
2 persons were killed due to a house collapsing in Mahabubnagar in the intervening night of May 8-9.
3 more persons were killed in the Prakasam district due to a thunderbolt, and a fisherman died due to his boat capsizing due to heavy winds, on Friday.
Due to thunderbolts, 2 persons were killed in the Srikakulam district, and 1 died in the Warangal district.
According to officials, a low pressure area over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and its neighbourhood, and an eventual upper air cyclonic circulation over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Chhattisgarh and Odisha, extending upto 5.8km above mean sea level, resulted in almost all districts in the State receiving unseasonal very heavy rains, with hailstorms and thunderbolts, on May 9 and 10, causing heavy damages.
In the last 2 days, West Godavari received 95.6mm of rainfall, followed by Khammam (92.2mm), East Godavari (84.2), Krishna (81.7), Visakhapatnam (55.3), Warangal (52.4), Nalgonda (38.7), Ranga Reddy (38), Guntur (36.4), Karimnagar (33.6), Vizianagaram (32.8), Srikakulam (29.8), Adilabad (21.3), Kurnool (21.3), Medak (19.2), Anantapur (17.1), Nizamabad (17.1), Prakasam (9.1), Chittoor (7.7), Nellore (7) and Kadapa (5.4).
The State received an average rainfall of 38mm.

As per the Civil Supplies Department, due to unseasonal very heavy rains, about 1200 MTs of paddy had become wet at the paddy purchase centres. However, the paddy is of the boiled variety, and normally water is added before processing in the boiled mills. So the paddy is being moved to the boiled mills by the district administrations.
Due to the unseasonal rains, 35,910 hectares of horticulture crops were also affected, in 92 mandals of 12 districts. The estimated loss is Rs. 35.91 crores.
The Met Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in the districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari of coastal Andhra Pradesh in the next 1-2 days. (INN)
