A tense situation prevailed outside the University Of Hyderabad as the Academic Council of the University met in the VC's lodge on Wednesday.
The Left organizations, which organized a "Chalo Central University" on Wednesday, staged a protest at the main gate of the university. Many students from several universities joined the protest, escalating the tension.
When the students and activists of the Left parties tried to enter the campus, the university security personnel did not allow them inside, and closed the gates. The security personnel however said that they were only stopping outsiders from entering into the university. The protesters then raised slogans demanding the enactment of a Rohith Act and the removal of Vice Chancellor Podile Appa Rao immediately.
At the Academic Council meeting, VC Appa Rao reportedly said that unless the teaching community remained united, the situation in the varsity would not return to normalcy. While the VC's appeal evoked mixed response from the teachers, Controller of Examinations Prof. Krishna expressed his resentment over the style of functioning of Appa Rao, and submitted his resignation to his post.
