In a spate of strikingly similar tragedies occuring in several places in India, a family of daily-wage labourers in Secunderabad left their deceased on a pavement along a crematorium as they were unable to foot the bill for cremation.
G Yadadiri, a man in his early 30s, met with an accident at a construction site in the city and slipped into comatose. He was rushed to the Gandhi hospital and was treated for a few days, and was declared brain dead on October 8.
He is survived by his wife, two children and a mother. The family approached a few administrative offices and also spoke to the crematorium authorities to allow them to bury the body, and promised to make the payement later. But the authorities allegedly did not consider their request. After a few media houses took stock of the situation, authorities are now coming forward to fund the cremation.
As per the locals in the area, this incident highlighted the growing apathy within the society and the administration. This is the fourth incident within two months where people were unable to afford even cremations and had to either drag the body barefoot or leave it to rot. In Telangana, this is the second incident in seven months.
