Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration & Urban Development K T Rama Rao today said that the state government was planning to construct two reservoirs of 20 TMCFT capacity each to quench the thirst of the twin cities.
Reacting to the criticism of opposition MLAs that the government was doing nothing to prepare for a looming drinking water crisis, KTR rejected the remarks as baseless and said efforts were being made to address the drinking water problem in the twin cities.
"We are planning to construct two 20 TMCFT reservoirs - one at Keshavapuram and another at Rachakonda - to address the growing drinking water needs in the future," he said.
He also said that daily water supply was on at 155 basthis in the twin cities now.
Recalling that the thirsty people of Khairatabad in the city used to stage dharnas with empty water pots frequently during the previous regime, he pointed out that such a situation had not been seen under the GHMC limits after the TRS came to power as all possible steps had been taken to tide over the water shortage.
He asked the BJP's Chintala Ramachandra Reddy pointedly whether such protests were happening at his Khairatabad constituency now, after the latter remarked that the TRS government had miserably failed in three years both to provide water to the twin cities from either the Krishna or the Godavari rivers, or to divert waters from the Singur and Manjira rivers to Patancheru and Gajwel.
"As against the earlier practice of utilizing the waters of these rivers, we are giving Mission Bhagiratha water to villages through which water pipelines pass," KTR also clarified.
KTR also said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was also taking a long-term view of addressing the drinking water problem, and that the government was taking the required steps.
