Speaking on the issue of child labour, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari today expressed serious concerns over the society's negligent attitude towards destitute children who were being forced to labour, and street-children and the physically challenged.
"Educational institutions and research centers should work together to weed out the rising social stigma against these children, and guide them towards a better life. The State government will extend all necessary support to those involved in social work," he said while participating as a chief guest in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Road Mistry College of Social Work.
Speaking on the occasion, Srihari expressed his grief over children not getting dignity and respect. It was the government's and the society's duty to take care of them, he said.
Stating that the government was ready to extend a helping hand, Srihari called upon social service institutions to recommend measures for rooting out child labour and protect the children and others who were being neglected by the society. There are child labourers working at various places in the State including cotton farms, hotels, industries, homes and other places.
Though GHMC was shifting street children to rehabilitation centers and providing shelter and more such children from other states are coming in to our state he noted. Social work centers and institutions on the issue have more work to do to address the problem.
