As unrest in India's agrarian community continues to swell, Telangana Civil Supplies Minister Gangula Kamalakar today reassured the farmers of the state that the TRS government was working hard to safeguard their interests despite the constraints of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, and was taking steps to procure the food grains produced by them.
"The state government is willing to purchase every grain produced by the farmers of Telangana at any cost. We have set up 6,441 food grain procurement centres across the state so that all the farmers can easily transport their produce for purchase. We have also already bought 40 lakh metric tonnes of fine quality rice and 14.81 lakh metric tonnes of common variety rice from 9,18,664 farmers by spending Rs 11,000 crore. The money from the sales were credited into the accounts of the farmers within four days of the purchases," the minister said.
Kamalakar also added that the government had appointed an adequate number of hamalis (porters) and other staff at the purchase centres, and had bought 15 crore gunny bags in which to store the produce.
The TRS government has been facing criticism from the Opposition for failing to support the farmers of the state despite making promises to do so.
