Additional Commissioner (Traffic) C V Anand said that strong measures need to be taken to increase awareness among the people regarding the usage of helmet and seat-belts to control the increasing number of accidents on city roads.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police is planning to initiate some tough measures to ensure implementation of helmet and seat-belt rule in the city to prevent road accidents.
Addressing the National Media Workshop on Road Safety here on Tuesday, Additional Commissioner (Traffic) CV Anand said that strong measures need to be taken to increase awareness among the people regarding the usage of helmet and seat-belts to control the increasing number of accidents on city roads. Furnishing the statistics, he said about 1.40 lakh people were getting killed in roads accidents across the country every year. In Hyderbad, alone, as many 481 people were killed in 2009, 494 in 2010, 441 in 2011 and 438 deaths have been reported this year so far due to road accidents. Similarly, the traffic violations have increased from 16.67 lakh in 2009 to 27.04 lakh this year.
Anand that adequate staff, better roads and other infrastructure could minimise the number of accidents in the city. He said the accidents on 18 flyovers in the city have reduced to a large extent after the construction of road dividers. He informed that the traffic police was collecting statistics on 1000 CC bikes and also sentising the owners of sports bikes.
The Additional Commissioner sought the help of media in creating awareness about prevention of road accidents in the city. (INN)
