A day after the Ganesh Visarjan procession passed, commuters were in for a shock, as major traffic jams were witnessed on roads leading to the Hussain Sagar Lake on Thursday.
According to police, the traffic jams were due to trucks which had been used for ferrying the Ganesh idols, returning from the lake after the immersion ceremony.
The immersions continued on till early on Thursday morning, with the Khairatabad and Balapur Ganesh idols immersed in Hussainsagar Lake on Thursday morning.
As lakhs of people had converged on the city to witness the immersion, traffic in many areas including Khairatabad, Liberty, Raj Bhavan Road, Somajiguda, Secretariat and Lakdi-ka-pul came to a grinding halt.
Another factor contributing to the traffic jams was that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)workers were instructed to remove the flags and banners which had been put up by the processionists. The GHMC trucks were seen at busy intersections, waiting for the Corporation workers to remove the flags and banners and load these onto the vehicles.
The authorities had earlier directed the GHMC officials to remove the flags and banners the day following any religious event, especially in the light of communal violence which had shocked the city in April this year.
