A rash attempt at curbing a defaulter of traffic rules caused the death of a retiree on Saturday.
R S Joseph, sub-inspector (traffic) at Vanasthalipuram, who was conducting regular on commuters, had singalled a motorist to stop. When the man sped forward regardless, Joseph tried to stop him by flinging a baton at motorist, which missed its target, and hit 77-year-old Pratap Reddy on his head, instead.
Pratap Reddy, a retired forest official, was rushed to a private hospital with critical head injuries, but succumbed to them yesterday.
The sub-inspector, who has been suspended by the Cyberabad Commissioner Tirumala Rao, hardly seems repantant, or even to be acknowledging his role in the accident.
Perhaps, it's all in a days work for the keepers of our law.
