Adding to the host of irregularities and frauds discovered in Andhra Pradesh's medical institutions lately is yet another case of a student going to great lengths to take the easy way out. Alekhya Reddy, who is a junior doctor at Tirupati's Ruia Government Hospital, went through her entire medical education under the name of a deceased girl called Mumtaz Begum.
The charade came to light when suspicions of the theft of large quantities of medicines fell upon Alekhya a.k.a. Mumtaz. Ironically, they never found anything suspiscious about a girl who joined as Mumtaz Begum signing all her papers as Alekhya.
When questioned by police, Alekhya confessed that it was her paternal uncle, now deceased, who had masterminded the whole ruse, right from getting her admitted into Sri Venkateshwara Medical College under the name of Mumtaz Begum in 2006, to getting her into Ruia Government Hospital.
The discovery of this scam has also brought to the forefront corrupt government officials who have allegedly accepted bribes of Rs. 14 lakhs to facilitate the pretense.
