Vysyas today demanded that the Telangana government create the long-pending Vysya Corporation immediately.
The Telangana Vysya Corporation Sadhana Samithi which met in the city on Sunday said that there were over 40 lakh members of the Arya Vysya community residing in Telangana, and that they had been appealing to the state government to set up a Vysya Corporation on the lines of those for Brahmins and Most Backward Classes, but that their request went in vain despite multiple assurances.
Holding placards in support of the Vysya Corporation, they raised slogans at the meeting demanding immediate action.
"We expected a budgetary allocation for the corporation this year but we were again disappointed," spokesmen for the community said. "It's true that 40% of the taxes in this country are paid by the Vysyas, but the community has many poor people who make their living by doing small and menial jobs. The Vysya Corporation will help these poor people."
"As we are considered an upper caste, we lack a proper share in education, employment and political representation, which hurts all the lesser privileged people of our community. We also want low-interest loans, scholarships and loans for higher education to the economically poor members of our community, and every political party to allocate 10% of seats to us," they added.
According to the community elders, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had responded favorably to the community's representation earlier, and the community was eagerly waiting for an official announcement, but were now a very disappointed lot.
"The Vysyas can be a deciding voting bank in many constituencies in Telangana," they cautioned.
