The Telangana government today decided to lift the 50% quota ceiling in the State and extend 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body elections.
Announcing the decision after a Cabinet meeting at the State Secretariat, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said that two bills to that effect would be tabled and approved in the ongoing Assembly session on Sunday.
Local body elections in Telangana are expected to be held in September, and the government has already written to the State Election Commission in this regard.
The minister said that the Cabinet had also approved the formation of a "Goshala Welfare Board", and the nominations of ex-Professor Kodandaram and former cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin as MLCs under the Governor's quota.
On agricultural issues, he said that the irregularities in the 2022-23 Rabi grain procurement would be probed and, if required, the Preventive Detention (PD) Act would be invoked.
He added that he would meet concerned officials on Monday to assess the crop damage caused by the recent heavy rains and provide relief to the affected farmers.
"Several lives and properties were lost due to the heavy rains. A detailed report will be prepared and reviewed by the Chief Minister," the minister said.
