To ensure that villages get good sanitation facilities, especially individual toilets, and avoid the problem of open urination and defecation in villages, the Telangana government today directed the officials concerned to construct six lakh toilets across all the 10 districts on a war footing.
As part of Swachch Bharath and Swachch Telangana, the Panchayat Raj department has taken up the task of constructing these toilets and helping the rural populace to avoid the indignity of open defection.
The government, at a high level meeting at the Secretariat on the need for toilets for all households in villages, asked the officials to construct them in just one year.
Upon directions from the Panchayat Raj minister K T Rama Rao, Principal Secretary Raymond Peter held a review meeting with the department officials and directed them to expedite the process of constructing the toilets.
Peter also asked the officials to prepare district-wise plans to meet the target.
The district-level officials should coordinate with the mandal and village officials and staff for smooth and speedy completion of the project, he said.
There should not be any compromise on quality, and any dereliction would see serious action, Peter warned.
