10 MPs, 36 MLAs (of which 10 are ministers in the AP cabinet) and 12 MLCs from the Congress, and 37 MLAs from TDP have resigned, in protest for Telangana.
Hyderabad | 4th July 2011
10 MPs, 36 MLAs (of which 10 are ministers in the AP cabinet) and 12 MLCs from the Congress have resigned today in a planned revolt against its High Command, to press for a separate Telangana state.
This morning, it looked like the Telangana Congress team was backing away from its declaration of mass resignations, since the MPs had skipped their scheduled meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.
The Centre had invited the rebelling Congress lawmakers to Delhi for talks, and Congress In-Charge Of AP Affairs Ghulam Nabi Azad was even "expecting some of them to reach Delhi by afternoon".
However, tender their resignations they all did, and a constitutional crisis in AP does not look like a remote possibility now.
9 Lok Sabha MPs and 1 Rajya Sabha MP are among those who have send in their letters of resignation to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.
MPs Jaipal Reddy, Sarvey Satyanarayana and Anjan Kumar Yadav, however, have consistently stayed away from the resignation business.
In addition, 37 TDP MLAs from Telangana have also quit.
THe strength of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly is 294, out of which 119 MLAs are from Telangana, and 175 from the rest of the state.
The Congress has 150 seats, and its ally the Praja Rajyam Party has 18. This brings the Congress' total to 168 MLAs.
The TDP has 90 MLAs, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi has 11, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) has 7, and Communist Party of India has 5.
