The Telangana government is set to make a decision on the fee structure for engineering colleges in the State.
As per reports, the new structure will be finalised after a comprehensive assessment of various parameters, including faculty strength, teaching standards, and laboratory facilities, buildings and other infrastructure.
With the rising demand for courses like Artificial Intelligence (AI), which significantly impact the technology sector, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy aims to ensure that engineering colleges in Telangana meet global standards.
To achieve this, the government is planning to establish a structured framework, allowing institutions to collaborate with the government and align themselves with evolving market needs. Accordingly, engineering colleges across the State are expected to improve their infrastructure, labs and teaching staff in line with AICTE guidelines. These factors will be key determinants in fixing the new fee structure.
The Supreme Court, in the Islamic Academy of Education vs Karnataka, and the P A Inamdar and Others vs State of Maharashtra cases, directed that facilities, lab infrastructure, salaries of teaching and non-teaching staff, future development plans, and efforts to enhance educational standards must be considered when determining fees. The State government will take these judicial guidelines into account.
Under the previous government, the Vigilance and Enforcement Department conducted inspections of engineering colleges and submitted a report on faculty and infrastructure. However, no action was taken on the report. Instead, the former administration is alleged to have allowed certain colleges to hike fees arbitrarily while showing partiality toward others.
In this context, the current government has decided to appoint a committee to evaluate the quality of education in engineering colleges and review the earlier report before deciding on the revised fee structure.
Simultaneously, the government has resolved to complete the engineering admission counselling process within the stipulated timeframe.
