The Telangana High Court today became serious on the attacks of street dogs on people.
The court lamented that incidents of children dying in attacks by stray dogs were coming to light each day, and expressed its displeasure over the State government ignoring the issue. It suggested that remedial measures be explored immediately to protect the children from street dogs, and directed the government to come up with such measures by the next hearing of the case.
The State government told the HC that there were 3,80,000 stray dogs in the GHMC limits. It also said that the straying of dogs onto the roads was due to the increase in the amount of solid waste on the streets. The HC then issued directions for the elimination of solid waste and keeping the surroundings clean.
The government also said that it was taking steps to control the stray dogs in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills areas of Hyderabad. The bench headed by the Chief Justice, however, said that the government's focus should be on the slums where the common man lived and not on the areas where the rich lived. It suggested that the authorities look into the issue in a humane manner. It also made it clear that this should not be treated as a small issue and that the authorities should respond immediately.
The case was adjourned to next week.
