The State Government was contemplating taking over the Malakpet Race Course in Hyderabad, according to Commercial Taxes Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav.
The minister told mediapersons that the Race Course management had been evading taxes and violating norms.
Yadav also disclosed that recently a team of officials had conducted raids on the Race Club. Besides seizing over Rs 51 lakhs in cash, they filed cases against six of the existing 24 bookies for evading taxes, he said.
Despite making crores in revenues, the Race Course was avoiding paying taxes, he alleged, and the government was therefore likely to take over the race course.
It was yet to be decided whether the government would run it itself or hand it over to others after the takeover.
Legal experts were being consulted in this regard, Yadav said.
The government would not spare anyone avoiding taxes, the minister warned.
