Legislators from the Seemandhra region expressed strong opposition to the draft Telangana Bill earlier today, and said that it would be a "threat to India's federal structure."
While debating the Andhra Pradesh State Reorganisation Bill 2013, S Sailajanath said, "The draft Bill leaves us wondering if the Constitution of India doesn't apply to AP. The Bill is totally unconstitutional."
He further added that division of state is a bad idea and expressesd concern over the status of Hyderabad being made a common capital.
"If Hyderabad is a common capital, are we tenants? Under which rule will Hyderabad be the common capital?" he questioned.
The minister who belongs to Rayalaseema said that if Telangana could be made a separate state, so could be done with Rayalaseems too as "it is the most backward region in the state".
However, Sailajanath's comments were met with criticism as several other leaders voiced their views.
Lok Satta leader Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan said, "Keeping the state united by force is not going to do any kind of good to anyone. It is better to separate amicably."
BJP leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy echoed his views and further added, "G.O. No. 36 says that the people of Telangana and Seemandhra form an unequal partnership and so, it would be unfair to keep them together."
