The proceedings of both the Houses of Parliament on the first day of the extended winter session on Wednesday were hit over the Centre's proposed move to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh to carve out the Telangana state.
Seemandhra MPs stalled both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, while opposing the tabling of the Telangana Bill. After repeated brief adjournments, both the Houses were adjourned for the day.
As soon as the both the Houses met on Wednesday, members from both the Telangana and Seemandhra regions trooped into the wells, raising slogans both in favour of and against the formation of Telangana. The MPs were carrying placards with their demands.
The issues of the death of Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tanium in Delhi, the August Westland chopper deal and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots were among the other issues that affected the functioning of the Parliament.
The protesting MPs did not respond to the repeated request of Speaker Meira Kumar to allow the proceedings of the Lok Sabha. Following the pandemonium, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned twice for brief periods and then adjourned for the day. (INN)
