Telangana DGP M Mahender Reddy today met with the son of Mariyamma, a Dalit woman who passed away after the Addagudur police reportedly brutally tortured her while she was in custody, at a hospital in Khammam.
The son of the victim, Uday Kiran, is himself undergoing treatment after he was assaulted by the police.
During his meeting, the DGP asked Uday Kiran for the details of the entire incident. He told the senior police official that the Addagudur police had beaten him and his mother brutally.
Breaking down in front of the DGP, Mariyamma's son urged Reddy to ensure that justice was done to his mother.
Responding to this, the DGP assured Kiran that the state government would extend all kinds of support to him, and added that all the accused police personnel had already been suspended.
Speaking to the media later, he termed Mariyamma's lock-up death as unfortunate, and stated that the police would conduct a detailed enquiry into the incident.
The incident has sparked much outrage across Telangana. A few days ago, a
delegation of Congress leaders, headed by CLP leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, had called on Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. The group had urged the latter to take action against those involved in the lock-up death.
