Director General of Police for Telangana Anurag Sharma said today in a press conference held in his office that the police department aimed to introduce several initiatives for containing attacks on women and other gender crimes in the State.
He said that the people were invited to assist the police in introducing people-friendly initiatives in fighting crime, traffic management, reducing crimes against women, and containing attacks on the aged and children.
He said that a task force and an internal committee of experts including representatives from civil society would review all the suggestions and opinions received from the public.
The police plan to introduce several major measures for containing attacks on women, and stop incidents like rapes, eve-teasing, chain-snatching etc.:
1. The Telangana police department will introduce more women's police stations by recruiting more women into the police force.
2. A women's desk will be set up at all police stations immediately, with some women constables and a female receptionist, on a 24x7 basis to receive complaints and take action in emergency cases.
3. Women counselors will be appointed at each police station in coordination with the Women and Child welfare Department, Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty (SERP) and Social Action committees.
4. The police will also take suggestions from the special committee chaired by Poonam Malakondaiah IAS, to study the attacks on women and recommend measures for the women's safety.
In addition, some more measures are being proposed for the better functioning of the force:
1. A legal advisor will be appointed in each police station for better case recording and FIR filing.
2. Investigation charges are proposed to be enhanced at all police stations so that the cost of probe is met to some extent and the police can take up cases without bothering about the cost.
3. A written test, an aptitude test and a physical test will be conducted for candidates during the selections, to improve the quality of policing and recruitment.
Sharma said that the Telangana police had already adopted some of the latest scientific techniques for traffic and crime detection, which have been deployed in foreign countries - e. g. uniforms with direct video links to the traffic force so that senior officials could monitor and also direct them on how to proceed during investigations.
The DGP said that the present exercise to invite constructive suggestions from the public was aimed at taking corrective steps and also at modifying the present system if necessary.
The DGP appealed to the people to suggest how the police force could function more efficiently and get closer to the people in its service of society.
He asked the public to send in their suggestions either by post or memoranda, so that the police department, which is an arm and wing of the civil society, can do justice to all sections and resolve their burning problems.
