Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President N Uttam Kumar Reddy today slammed Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao over his "silence" on the "sufferings" of the general public caused by the Centre's "unplanned" move to demonetize high value currency notes.
Addressing the media at Warangal on Friday, the TPCC chief accused the Chief Minister of taking a dual stand on the issue. The CM needs to decide which one was it - a bad move that incurred huge losses on Telangana or a brilliant that would "weed out" corruption. He also needed to decide whether or not people were facing hardships, as this seemed to confuse him during his recent to the national capital, Reddy said.
He also said that KCR should emulate other Chief Ministers in the country, in openly speaking against the Prime Minister's decision.
"KCR is obviously trying to gain a political headstart in the upcoming elections by supporting the Centre. However he is not realizing the impact his decision will have on the people of the State," he added.
Agreeing with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who in his speech at Rajya Sabha recently described the ban on the two currency bills as a "monumental economic disaster", and "legalized plunder", Reddy said that Telangana was one among the worst-hit States.
He pointed out that while people were unable to withdraw money from their bank accounts, the Centre was issuing new guidelines on a daily basis. He said that the Centre's latest decision of not allowing exchange of old notes at banks put millions of people to trouble.
"People living in 30 out of 31 districts of Telangana will now have to travel to Hyderabad to get their old notes exchanged at the RBI. They will have to bear the travel cost and also lose their day's earning to visit the Reserve Bank's counter to exchange Rs 2,000 notes. The Central government is inventing new means each day to torture the common man," he added.
The Congress President announced that his Party would observe "Aakrosh Diwas" on November 28, wherein protest rallies would be organized across the State. He directed all Party workers to actively participate in the rally and express their anger against the "inhuman" approach of both the Union and State governments towards the common people.
Former PCC President Ponnala Lakshmaiah, MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy, former Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu, former chief whip Gandra Venkataramana Reddy and others were present.
