Leader of Opposition in the Telangana Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir on Friday demanded a CBI probe into slain gangster Mohammed Nayeemuddin's gang.
Nayeem was killed in a gun battle with the State police on August 8.
Addressing the media at the CLP office, Shabbir Ali said that the seizure of huge amounts of cash, arms, ammunition and land documents revealed how deep Nayeem's influence and legacy were.
"The land documents recovered from Nayeem's associates reveal the gangster's wide web of connections which doesn't seem to be restricted to Telangana, but extends to Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Chattisgarh and Odisha," he said.
As per Shabbir Ali, a CBI probe would be essential at this stage because the recovery of AK-47 assault rifles, sten guns and explosives meant a threat to national security. He also said that only the Income Tax department and the Directorate Of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) would be able to trace the origin of the huge amounts of cash that were recovered from Nayeem's hideouts. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the State government would not be able to conduct the kind of multi-dimensional, multi-disciplinary and inter-State investigations needed for an issue of this magnitude, he opined.
An SIT would also not be able to investigate throughly since the names of several senior police officials were making the rounds in this case, Shabbir Ali said.
"Some DGP rank officials, both serving and retired, allegedly acted hand-in-glove with Nayeem. Can we expect the SIT members to investigate the role of their employers?" he asked.
Shabbir Ali also claimed that several bureaucrats, politicians, industrialists and realtors appeared to be part of Nayeemuddin's ring.
"Recently, the move to develop the Yadadri temple gave a big boost to the real estate sector in Bhongir and its surrounding areas. Everyone was trying to capatalise the realty boom. Nayeem and his gang probably prospered acting as musclemen in illegal land dealings. Everyone who aided him, irrespective of their party affiliations and posts, should be arrested," he added.
"The CM should therefore consider our demand and order a CBI investigation immediately," he demanded.
