Protesting the alleged surge in prices of edible salt in the nation, the Telangana Congress organized a "salt march" from Gandhi Bhavan to the State BJP office in Hyderabad on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, several Congress members alleged that the prices of salt and other commodities were rising uncontrollably due to shortage of salt in reserves, and neither the State nor the Centre were able to control the surge.
Poor people were facing the brunt of the hike coupled with the recent demonetisation of the Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 notes.
Unconfirmed rumours in the State on prices of salt surging uncontrollably spread after reports of depletion of salt mines surfaced. Frantic buyers rushed to nearby stores to buy table salt before the surge spiked further. Several shops have reportedly cashed on these rumours and sold salt at Rs. 300 per kilogram at some places in the city.
The police detained the protesters as the latter tried to move towards the State BJP office.
