Elections to the 12 Assembly constituencies in the Telangana region began at 7am on Tuesday morning. The first 4 hours saw 20% of voter turnout, from a populace of 23,59,228 eligible voters.
Tension and police lathi charge are marking the polls in the Nizamabad Urban constituency, where people claim that their names aren't in the voters' list despite the fact that they voted in the last election and are still carrying valid voter ID cards. There are also allegations that certain political parties are bringing in fraudulent voters from other regions of the state.
The police had to resort to lathicharge when people there started protesting against being turned away from the polling booths.
