It may be a coincidence, but the city was put on high alert the very day after a techie approached the police with fraudulent information on possible terror attacks.
Claiming that he had cracked into mails containing sensitive information, a youth approached the city police on 5 March with information that there could be trouble in the city.
The police, already facing flak for the Dilshuknagar case, took it rather seriously and forwarded the matter to superiors.
It may be a coincidence, but the city was put on high alert and a blanket of security was thrown over the city, with heavy frisking and closure of places where people gather, like hotels and restaurants, from the very next day.
There was also news that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has alerted of some trouble.
But the techie, Vivek, first approached police on 2 March claiming that he has developed a software that can track e-mail chats, and gave a brief summary of the salient features of his programme. "On 5 March, he came with a printed out, extracted from e-mail id of seven sources, and the communication in the mails hinted of the likelihood of another terrorist attack in Hyderabad in near future," Commissioner of Police Anurag Sharma told reporters here.
As information was sent to the higher-ups, there were cross-checks which proved that the information was concocted, and the techie had fabricated the information to mislead the police.
A case was registered against him and he was remanded to judicial custody, the commissioner said. (INN)
