Telangana Commercial Taxes Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav expressed solidarity with the agitating jewellers on Monday.
Jewellers in all parts of the country are agitating against the imposition of excise tax on the industry by the Union government, and city jewellers organized a rally today from General Bazaar in Secunderabad. Talasani flagged off the rally, and walked along with the protestors till the end. The rally went through Mahankali Street, R P Road, Pot Market and Station Road, and ended at Clock Tower.
Speaking on the occasion, Talasani said that it was unfortunate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who opposed the imposition of excise tax on the gold business when he was in the Opposition, was now keeping silent on the issue though the jewelers were on the warpath since March 2.
The jewellers lamented that they were incurring heavy losses due to the 1% excise tax on the sale of gold ornaments.
Corporators Aruna Srinivas Goud and Akula Roopa Harikrishna, Pot Market Gold Businessmen's Association president Mohanlal Jain and general secretary Jagadeesh Prasad, former corporator Athili Mallikarjun Goud, TRS division president Nagulu and others participated in the rally.
