The BRS has rescheduled its BC Garjana rally in Karimnagar from August 8 to August 14 due to adverse weather conditions, particularly heavy rainfall.
BRS MLA and former minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav, while announcing the postponement, today reiterated the party's demand for 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local governance, education and employment.
Addressing a press conference at Telangana Bhavan, Yadav criticised the Congress and accused it of engaging in political theatrics in Delhi while ignoring the real needs of the BC community at the grassroots level.
He referred to the Kamareddy Declaration where the Congress had promised 42% reservations and a Rs 1 lakh crore budget for the BCs, and questioned the party's current commitment to those promises. "Where is it now?" he asked.
The BRS MLA also spoke about the absence of senior Congress leaders - Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge - at the party's protest in Delhi, in contrast to the participation of leaders from other INDIA bloc parties.
He demanded that the State government defer local body elections until the 42% reservation for BCs was implemented.
Leader of Opposition in the Telangana Council S Madhusudhana Chary said that the BRS fully supported BC reservation legislation in both the Assembly and the Council.
"We urged that BC reservations be included in the Ninth Schedule, as was done in Tamil Nadu. Congress leaders did not consult us on their Delhi plans, as our involvement would have exposed their inconsistency," he said.
Former minister V Srinivas Goud also criticised the Congress for offering only token representation to BCs.
"They promised 42% reservations but submitted an ordinance to the Governor only for local body elections - completely omitting education and employment. Even within the Cabinet, BC representation remains nominal," he said.
