Ponnam rubbished the rumours that the SRC was being set up with Telangana in view, and clarified that the SRC was only an attempt to check UP Chief Minister Mayawati.
With the Uttar Pradesh (UP) section of the All India Congress demanding that a 2nd States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) be set up to probe into the popular demand for the trifurcation of the state into Harit Pradesh, Purvanchal and Bundelkhand, speculations are rife that the SRC would take also take up the issue of Telangana.
Telangana Congress leader Ponnam Prabhakar on Monday clarified that the state government did not intend to let the SRC probe the Telangana issue. He further stated that Telangana Congress members themselves would protest against the SRC in the event that it does take up the Telangana statehood issue.
He rubbished rumours that the SRC was being set up with Telangana in view, and clarified that the SRC was only an attempt to keep in check UP Chief Minister Mayawati. He reiterated that the sole objective of the SRC would be to probe the demand for the trifurcation of UP.
Telangana leaders opine that no further investigation is required into the demand for a separate Telangana, and oppose the SRC taking up the issue of Telangana because they fear that it will cause further delay in the formation of a Telangana state. Or worse still, declare that a separate state is not required.
