The Telangana government owes over Rs 1,250 crores towards fee reimbursement to the private colleges in the State.
Addressing a press conference, Telangana Engineering and Professional Colleges Management Association chairman N Gautam Rao and Secretary Md Khaleel informed that there were 350 engineering, 167 pharmacy, 400 MBA and over 200 B Ed colleges in Telangana, with an intake of nearly 10 lakh students.
They said that the colleges were facing a deep crisis due to the inability of the government to clear dues, and that the colleges were not able to pay salaries to their 1.5 lakh staff.
Gautam Rao said that the government should not delay the payments further as the delay had already pushed several colleges to the verge of closure.
Md Khaleel said that fee reimbursements constituted nearly 80% of the total revenues of these colleges. The delay had forced several colleges to borrow banks loans at huge interests to meet regular expenses.
He appealed to the government to release the fee reimbursement dues immediately. (INN)
