The South Central Railway has penalized as many as 5,800 people, for littering or spitting on the railway premises, during the month of August this year.
According to the SCR, the penalized include - 865 persons in the Secunderabad Division, 411 persons in the Hyderabad Division, 2088 persons in the Vijayawada Division, 559 persons in the Nanded Division, 1130 persons in the Guntakal Division, and 743 persons in Guntur Division. A total amount of Rs. 11.70 lakh was realized from all the persons, towards penalty.
During the first five months of the current financial year, i. e., from April to August 2013, 32,800 persons were detected littering, spitting etc, on the railway premises, and an amount of Rs. 66.00 lakh was realized from them towards penalty.
The Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises) Rules - 2012 came into effect from November 2012. The rules stipulate penalties of upto Rs. 500 on any person / passenger found either "littering or spitting or urinating or defecating or pasting posters or dumping garbage on railway premises etc.".
