For the first time in the 300-year history of the temple, the ritualistic wedding of Lord Rama and goddess Sita on Sri Rama Navami was performed at the Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple in Bhadrachalam today without devotees due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The wedding of the divine couple on the occasion of Sri Rama Navami attracts lakhs of people from all over every year, and is generally conducted in the Mithila stadium in a grand manner, but this year it was performed in the precincts of the main mandapam at the temple, and had very sparse attendance - only about 40 people, some of them wearing face masks, attended the ceremony.
However devotees were provided the opportunity to watch the ritual in TV channels as the event was telecast live by the majority of Telugu channels between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm.
Endowments Minister Indrakaran Reddy extended silk clothes (pattu vastharlu) for the wedding on behalf of the state government. Transport Minister P Ajay Kumar and government advisor K V Ramanachari also made offerings to the temple.
