The workers of Singareni Collieries Company Limited today launched a 72-hour strike condemning the decision of the union government to privatize some coal mines.
Workers unions including GKS, AITUC, INTUC and CITU took part in the strike.
Workers belonging to the JVR open cast and Kistaram open cast mines also took part. A total of 750 workers from these two mines took part in the strike.
The strike has led to the suspension of the production of coal, and of its transportation.
In Peddapalli district itself, the strike led to the suspension of coal production in six underground mines and four open cast mines.
Speaking on the occasion, the workers demanded that the Centre immediately withdraw its decision, and warned that they would intensify their agitation if the Centre did not fulfill their demands.
The union government decided to privatise the JVR OCP+3, Koyaguden OCP-3, Sravanapally OCP and KK mines.
