Maoist senior leader and Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee member Gajarla Ashok alias Ithu surrendered in front of the police in Warangal on Tuesday.
Speaking on this occasion, Ashok, who worked for the last 24 years with the Naxalite movement, announced that he was joining public life due to health reasons.
Ashok, who hails from Velishala village in the Chityal mandal of the Warangal district, made it clear that there was no pressure from the police involved in his surrender.
Ashok joined the Maoist movement at the age of 18, and several cases have been filed against him in Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
On the occasion, Warangal Range DIG Malla Reddy called upon the Maoists to join public life. He announced that some more Maoists were ready to surrender to the police following the path of Ashok.
He stated that the police would extend all possible assistance on behalf of the State government to the surrendering Naxalites.
