CPI National Secretary Dr K Narayana today welcomed Telangana CM KCR's directive to the DGP of the State Anjani Kumar to withdraw the criminal cases filed under the UAPA against human rights activist and retired University of Hyderabad Professor, Haragopal.
151 other people at the Mulugu police station of the State will also benefit from the stance taken by KCR.
Narayana said that Professor Haragopal had participated in many public struggles including the separate Telangana movement, and had expressed his support to all public protest programs. During the Telangana movement, Haragopal made speeches in such a way that the whole country came to know about the injustices being done to the Telangana region, he recalled.
CPI State secretary Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao too said that the decision of CM KCR to withdraw the UAPA case filed against Professor Haragopal, Professor Padmaja Shah and 150 others was heartening.
He extended special thanks to the Chief Minister for taking "the right decision at the right time". Kunamneni said that those seeking to protect democracy and people's representatives wishing to provide a democratic rule needed to work together towards repealing the "draconian" UAPA across the country, and urged KCR to take special initiative to get the Act repealed.
He also pointed out that the Supreme Court of India had itself ruled that the sedition law should be repealed.
