The L B Nagar police today registered a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against BRS MLA D Sudhir Reddy.
The case was filed following allegations that Reddy had made derogatory remarks referencing the caste of Hastinapuram corporator Banoth Sujatha Naik who belongs to the Congress.
The police invoked Sections 3(2)(a) and 3(1)(r)(w)(ii) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, along with Section 79 of the BNS, in the case registered against the MLA.
The controversy began on March 12, when the MLA made contentious remarks alleging that Congress leader Madhu Yashki Goud and corporator Banoth Sujatha Naik were "on a honeymoon".
The comments led to an uproar, and Congress activists have been protesting for two consecutive days demanding strict action against the BRS MLA.
Demonstrations included burning an effigy of Reddy and submitting complaints to local police stations as well as to higher authorities such as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
The L B Nagar police finally registered a case against Reddy today following a complaint lodged by Naik.
The incident has intensified political tensions in the region, with calls for appropriate legal action against the MLA.
