Technical Education Minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana on Thursday announced that the state government will spend Rs. 3,000 crore to develop infrastructure and faculty in the 3 IIITs of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies.
Talking to media persons, Venkata Ramana said that classes for the fresh batch of 3,000 students (consisting of 85% seats from rural areas and 15% from urban areas) in the 3 IIITs would commence from July 12, and that the list of qualified students will be announced on June 25. Certificates of the qualified candidates will be verified on July 9 and 10.
He said the intake of the students this year was reduced to 3,000 from the 3 universities as against 6,000 seats last year, in view of problems like lack of infrastructure and faculty. Venkata Ramana said the 3 universities had received 32,000 applications for 6,000 seats last year while this year it had received 26,492 applications for 3,000 seats, which would be finalised on June 25.
The Technical Education Minister said that the government reduced the seats this year as it did not want to create problems for the students after their admission in to the IIITs. He said the government would think on increasing the intake capacity in the universities once it establishes sufficient infrastructure like buildings, hostel facilities and faculty.
Stating that the state government had already released Rs. 700 crore for 3 universities and that it would release another Rs. 100 crore soon, he said proposals had already been sent to the centre for grants for these universities.
