Minister for Finance T Harish Rao presented a budget of Rs 2,90,396 crore for Telangana for 2023-24 in the State Assembly today.
The total revenue expenditure is pegged at Rs 2,11,685 crore and the capital expenditure at Rs 37,525 crore. This is around Rs 34,000 crore more than the previous budget of Rs 2.56 lakh crore (2022-23).
The highlights of the budget are the regularisation of contract employees, a Rs 26,885-crore allocation for irrigation, Rs 26,831 crore for agriculture, Rs 19,093 for education, Rs 12,161 crore for medical and health, Rs 12,727 crore for energy, Rs 12,000 crore for Asara pensions, Rs 17,700 crore for Dalit Bandhu, Rs 35,750 crore for a Special Development Fund for Scheduled Castes, Rs 15,233 crore for a Special Development Fund for Scheduled Tribes, Rs 6,229 crore for the welfare of BCs, Rs 3,210 crore for Kalyana Lakshmi / Shaadi Mubarak, and Rs 2,200 crore for the welfare of minorities and implementing KCR Nutrition Kit across Telangana.
The government has also given priority to infrastructure development and public welfare in the latest budget. A total of Rs 2,500 crore has been allotted for the maintenance of the Roads & Buildings roads, and Rs 2,000 crore for the maintenance of Panchayat Raj roads.
Also, around Rs 1,000 crore have been set aside for the salaries for new recruits in different government departments. A total of Rs 3,360 crore for Palle Pragathi and another Rs 1,474 crore for Pattana Pragathi have also been sanctioned. The Finance Minister said that for the effective implementation of the Palle Pragathi and Pattana Pragathi schemes in the State, the State government would release the State's matching share along with the Finance Commission grants directly to the bank accounts of the local bodies.
