Relentless heavy rainfall, caused by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, for the last three days is turning the lives of those living in Nellore district upside-down. Adding to their watery woes is the opening of the floodgates of Chittoor's Kalangi Reservoir, as Chittoor is facing a similar situation.
However, while that circumstance alleviated the situation in Chittoor, it caused streams running through Nellore district to swell up and over flow, with the district now on the precipice of an alarming flood.
All activity in towns and villages has come to a standstill as roads and streets have been eclipsed by the deluge, with the uncertainty of uncovered manholes to add peril to the discomfort.
Around 50 villages on the banks of the river Kalangi and other low-lying areas have become completely inaccessible, while more than 105 families are stranded in their own homes.
Paddy farmers of Sullurpeta, who had been grateful for the rainfall until yesterday, are now fearful for their livelihood as the deluge threatens to ruin their crop.
No efforts have been made by government officials to control, or even assess, the situation.
