Montha Shifting To North Telangana; More Rains Ahead

The cyclone is also reportedly gaining a little strength as it interacts with local moisture, and is expected to affect the region over the next 48 hours.
Hyderabad | 29th October 2025
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today issued a warning to Telangana regarding a deep depression caused by the severe cyclonic storm Montha, saying it posed a significant threat to the North Telangana and South Bastar regions.

Although the cyclone has weakened, it continues to present potential dangers. Recent IMD observations and forecast tracks indicate that the system's remnants are moving toward North Telangana. Initially expected to dissipate off the eastern coast, the depression has unexpectedly shifted northward.

The cyclone is also reportedly gaining a little strength as it interacts with local moisture, and is expected to affect the region over the next 24 to 48 hours. Districts along the Godavari basin are directly in its path, with areas from Bhadrachalam in the east to Karimnagar in the northwest likely to experience winds ranging from 28 to 33 km per hour. These winds, though moderate, have the potential to uproot trees, disrupt power lines, and make travel difficult on waterlogged roads. Low-lying areas, still recovering from last week's heavy rains, face an increased risk of flash floods.

The primary threat from the cyclone, however, is the expected heavy rainfall, with IMD models forecasting precipitation exceeding 100 mm in certain regions. So far, due to Montha's impact, Telangana witnessed widespread heavy rainfall on Wednesday. The highest rainfall of 20.8 cm was recorded at Uppunthal in Nagarkurnool district. Other significant readings include 19.7 cm in Amrabad (Nagarkurnool), 18.5 cm in Teldevarapalli (Nalgonda), 18.3 cm in Veltur (Nagarkurnool), 17.8 cm in Ainolu, 15.1 cm in Erraram (Nalgonda), 13.9 cm in Velijala (Rangareddy), 13.3 cm in Polepalli, 12.6 cm in Revalli (Wanaparthy) and 11.9 cm in Midji (Mahabubnagar).

In Hyderabad, Gachibowli, Khajaguda, Nanakramguda, Musheerabad, RTC Cross Roads, Gandhinagar, Kavadiguda, Bholakpur, Amberpet, Kacheguda, Nallakunta, Barkatpura, B N Reddy Nagar, Meerpet, Balapur, Badangpet, Maheshwaram, Thukkuguda, Pahadisharif, Jawaharnagar, Chikkadpally, Baglingampally and Domalaguda received heavy rains, resulting in severe waterlogging on roads and major traffic disruptions.
